Only on the Weekends

I absolutely love books in verse and I will definitely be adding this to my favorites list! Books in verse just flow in such a different way and add so much emotion and energy to the story. Absolutely loved Atta's writing style and how he weaved in each different character. Sometimes it is hard to show such complex emotions, relationships and dynamics with verse but Atta did a fabulous job. That being said, this is a teenage love story and coming-of-age story. Don't expect the best decisions to be made by our main character. I think this book did show a very real side of first relationships, especially first LGBT relationships. Some people are more out than others and this can definitely complicate even the simplest of relationships. I would love to see how Mack grows up and matures as well as K and how their relationship with each other and their identity changes along the way. This book also gave a really great perspective on the coming out process and how that is truly different for each and every individual. I think this is a book that a lot of young adults would enjoy and does technically tell the real story that doesn't always have a happy ending. I really disliked the way Mack treated K. I understand that they are teenagers and young love is not always easy. They should have been open with each other from the start about what they wanted from the relationship. I think they would have realized that even though they cared about one another, it wouldn't have worked out. I wish that K didn't have to have his heart broken so badly but this does really show the reality of certain early relationships. So maybe it is better to see something more realistic
