According to a recent report, the Philippines is more likely to experience natural calamities than any other country. We are indeed all too familiar with disasters, causing most of us to ask, "Why does God allow such things?" Is this just the result of our geographic location, or some sort of Divine punishment?
Jeepneys often carry the slogan "God is good." We sometimes expand it to "God is good all the time." The truth is that God alone is good (Mark 10:18) and His character does not change (Hebrews 13:8). So, does this truth conflict with what our nation so often experiences? No, Jesus said we'd have trouble in this world (John 16:33) and that the world would experience many natural disasters of increasing severity (Matthew 24). His goodness does not exclude any of us from these.
Instead, the trials we face provide us opportunities to strengthen our faith, as we trust Him to walk us through the tough times and meet our every need. He alone can provide the perfect peace, comfort, and guidance needed to face life's difficulties. All these can be ours as we get to know Him through His Word, the Bible.
