In this novel Simone Schwarz-Bart shows the survival power of the women of Guadeloupe who live in conditions of extreme poverty and deprivation and yet who are filled with dauntless courage and love for life. The story is of the proud Lougandor women --Toussine the grandmother who, when luck deserts her, refuses to "make a habit of sorrow" instilling in her grand-daughter, Telumee, the same principles of self reliance. For these two women happiness and suffering are different sides of the same coin. The Bridge of Beyond was awarded the literary prize of the French magazine Elle.
