Programming Languages: Design and Implementation

Description This book continues the tradition of considering the softwareand hardware architecture when describing the features of aprogramming language. It provides programmers with the perspectiveto develop correct and efficient software. It lays emphasis on theWorld Wide Web and its impact on programming. More information isincluded on distributed computing and client/server algorithms. Newtopics include Java, HTML web page design, CGI scripts, and thePERL and Postscript languages. Brief summaries are given of 11 languages: Ada, C, C++, FORTAN, Java, LISP, ML, Pascal, Postscript, Prolog, and Smalltalk. There is also additional information on HTML and PERL. The text is not oriented to any one language. Examples of language constructs are given in several languages to demonstrate their universality. All examples have been tested on an appropriate translator. Many different models of program design are covered: algebraic procedural language, applicative programming, logic programming, object-oriented programming, distributed and client/server programming, web page development, and text processing applications. The text is comprehensive. Chapters 1 and 2 provide a review of background material, and sections on language semantics, compilers and parallel programming provide additional topics for the advanced student.
