The Clockwork Testament Or Enderby's End

The shocking and provocative character of Stanley Kubrick's mechanical orange film did not fail to elicit hostile reactions upon its release, even though many critics enjoyed the visual and musical richness. Anthony Burgess, who had participated in the campaign to promote the film in the media, was also indicted as the author of the original novel. He defended himself from having done the apology of violence and presented his novel as a "Christian sermon." This defense appeared to be unconvincing, and the press campaign continued in 1972 and 1973 years, during which several horrific events were attributed to the negative influence of the film and the novel.
Anthony Burgess transposed this painful experience into his latest novel in the Enderby series, the testament of the Orange, published in 1973.
The novel tells of the misadventures of Enderby, an obscure writer who adapted for the cinema a poem by G.M. Hopkins, the sinking of the Deutschland. The filmmaker who used his script made it a scab story of young Nazis raping nuns, and poor Enderby is constantly summoned to explain and justify himself.
