The matter that is made the subject of these pages is not to-day the most prominent, but it is the gravest, in American affairs. It is one upon which, of late years, as we might say, much inattention has been carefully bestowed. It has become a dreaded question. We are not politically indolent. We are dealing courageously with many serious problems. We admit that no nation has yet so shaken wrong and oppression from its skires that it may safely and honorably sit down in a state of mercantile and aesthetical pre-occupation. And yet the matter that gives us daily the profoundest unrest goes daily by default.
