설명

Kahlil Gibran’s masterpiece, The Prophet, is one of the most beloved classics of our time. Published in 1923, it has been translated into more than twenty languages, and the American editions alone have sold more than nine million copies.

The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Gibran’s musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.

The Prophet is a well-loved classic of poetic essays. Each chapter discusses a different topic such as love, marriage, children, and joy. However, this style of writing did not appeal to me. While I enjoyed some parts of the book, the discussions were often too high-level and resembled a self-help book. The concepts presented were often obvious, and the only thing that kept me reading was learning about the life of Khalil Gibran, which I researched online. For instance, one chapter on Clothes suggests that we should wear clothes that reflect our true selves, which sounds superficial and self-help oriented. However, after researching Gibran's life, I found that he enjoyed going out in the rain naked as a child, making this concept more profound and personal to his experience. Although I found the research aspect interesting, I cannot say that it entirely validated my enjoyment of the book. I may consider reading other books by the author, but only if they are stories rather than essays.
