I liked Evelyn's story but only really cared about her, Harry and Celia's relationships together. So the begining wasn't that interesting to me but going on I really started to appreciate the character that is Evelyn Hugo. The last part where everyone's death is hurried in the story does seem a bit like a "cover-up". It's like we need to feel sorry for her and that's why we should like her. Which isn't the first time in the story. But between those two parts you truly want to adore her. Maybe because she is what a lot of people want. Everybody seems to want fame even if it means giving up everything. Evelyn shows us the ups and downs that can occur when you reach that goal. She goes from having nothing to lose, to losing it all. As for Monique's part, I didn't get really invested enough to truly care about her broken relationship and the way she finally stood up to David, going through with the divorce.Besides that, the secret we were supposed to be longing for was kinda predictable. I mean her father "died of drunk driving", he used to work on set and he absolutely loved it there. When you read about Harry's accident and how they moved the bodies around, you cannot help but at least expect. In my opinion, Monique was necessary for the storytelling but only made me want to skip her few chapters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I liked how real the characters feel and how they react to situations. The relationships that Evelyn had over the years and how they shaped her into who she is. The plot twist i felt like i should have seen it coming but i liked the surprise nonetheless.

This book was a masterpiece!!!!

I loved the way the story was laid out. I fell in love with Evelyn as we go through the husbands and her career. The ending was so sad but what was needed to be done.Update: 4.5/5 rating as of 3/1/23

evelyn and celia have ruined me but also they are now everything to me. this book is just so beautifully written and i am in fact already planning a reread.

This book didn't really do it for me but I didn't entirely hate it either.I liked reading about Evelyn's Hollywood antics but overall the book lacks depth. Everything in this book just seems overly superficial. For example, when the author kept randomly throwing in random descriptions of what the people were wearing, in great detail, I knew I wouldn't be rating this book higher than a 4 star.I totally see why it's a bestseller as the book is framed as a biography but is read as if it were written for a column in a magazine. It included all the juicy gossip of a famous person's life but excluded all of that person's character. Overall, I found the book to be quite shallow but maybe it was intended that way. Hollywood can be a very shallow place after all. I've never been one for drama and gossip which is another reason why I think I'm so indifferent about the book and found the characters hard to like let alone love (Apart from Harry. I loved Harry's character).

Easy read with a bit of mystery but predictable. Good if you have been struggling to get back into reading.

Taylor Jenkins Reid books never disappoint and this one defiantly did not!Evelyn is such an amazingly written character and she captures the true meaning of what it means to be a movie star in the 50s, and the lengths she is willing to go to be a star. This book was a joy to read with some twists. Evelyn was willing to do anything for the people she loves, even if it means sacrificing the carrer she spent so long creating for herself. This book is a different take on enemies to lovers and I loved it and really enjoyed experiencing all of Evelyns relationships, but it also showed what it was like to be bisexual in the 50s.Evelyn is willing to give up everything for Celia, even after all the mistakes and pain she has caused Celia, but she is wiling to take Evelyn back for he last time before her sad and tragic death.Evelyn has lost everything she ever loved in her life, her daughter and her wife.

Complete surprise. I didn't expect to enjoy this but I did. It is NOT a man's book bur read it as a book about Hollywood.
