설명
Also known as Romance of the West Chamber, or The Story of the Western Wing, one of the most popular dramatic works of imperial China.
This is the story of a secret love affair between Zhang Sheng, a young scholar, and Cui Yingying, the daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court. Due to its unambiguous depictions of adultery, this play was considered by some as licentious.
According to the translator, his translation is based on the 15-act original version of the play, whereas other versions include additional acts which he claims were added by later authors.
The book includes an introduction by the translator, containing a brief history of drama in China, and a survey of Chinese dramatic conventions.
