This is a story, set in Chicago during the 1930's, of a young man from a wealthy family who falls in love with a young woman from a poor, immigrant family. Neither set of parents is happy, although for different reasons, and other family stresses add to the young man's problems. In the end, they go through various experiences which teach them to see life, themselves, their responsibilities, and their relationship with each other and their families more clearly.
