I gave this one a single star simply because it doesn't fall within the category of books I have enjoyed reading, or would one day feel the need or desire to read again. If anything, this novel has come between me and the love of reading for a while, as I struggled to finish it.There are so many things that I dislike about it, but it's mainly the lack of plot that bugs me most. The entire storyline is an endless daily routine of a given Johnny, Wake up son, train, eat, do this, do that, and go to sleep, only to do the same thing all over again the next morning. If you read it as a war novel, it's not any better as it lacks any serious conflict or battle scenes that could make your blood tingle. If you read it as a bildungsroman following the development of its central character, then it's even worse. Needless to say that Johnny is pretty much the same from beginning to end, only he's an oversized teenager at the end of the novel instead of a regular one at the beginning. I don't think much of his mindset is changed, nor are his morals. After all, he joined the MI because a friend of his suggested it, and he became an officer only because another friend had also suggested it. As far as the politics of the book are concerned, I don't even want to start the conversation, nor dwell on the author and his own perspective. Going to the bitter end with that one was already too much so yeah and next please.
