나이에 비해 너무 성숙한데 되바라지기까지 해서 학교에서는 왕따요, 선생님들에게는 눈엣가시며, 주변 어른들에게는 도무지 적응이 안 되는 존재인 일곱 살 엘사. 당연히 친구도 없고 말상대라고 해봐야 엄마도 아니라 한 세대 건너뛴 할머니뿐이다. 통속적이지 않은, 오히려 기존 관념의 틀을 깨는 독특한 캐릭터인 할머니는 남들과는 조금 다른 생각을 하는 손녀를 당당하고 떳떳하게 자라게 하는 양분 역할을 한다.
이야기는 엘사의 하나뿐인 든든한 지원군 할머니가 편지 배달이라는 아주 중요하고 어려운 임무(?)를 엘사에게 맡기면서부터 시작된다. 내일부터는 동화처럼 신기한 일들과 엄청난 모험이 펼쳐질 거라고, 그런 데 보냈다고 할머니를 미워하지 말아달라고, 무슨 일이 있더라도 집과 가족과 친구들을 지켜달라고 하면서 말이다. “저기요, 초면에 실례인데요. 우리 할머니가 미안하다면서 안부 전해달라고 했어요.” ‘평범한’ 아파트에 사는 ‘대체로 평범한’ 주민들에게 전해진 편지 한 통, 그 편지를 받고 나서부터 마법 같은 기적이 시작된다!

First, I breaks my heart to rate this 3 stars, but I just can't give it 4. As a preface, I've read the following books by Backman in this order: Anxious People, Beartown, Us Against You - and I've rated them all a solid 5 stars. In fact, I own all his books and the reason why I haven't read The Winners yet is because I'm not quite ready to get my heart broken. I digress. So I chose this book of Backman's to read next. I loved Granny in this book for the most part and she reminded me of my own Grandma. So that made me happy. I liked Elsa but had a hard time wrapping my head around an almost eight year old being as intellectually advanced as she was. Perhaps it would've been more realistic and less stressful to my psyche if she were 10ish. The character development in this book was fantastic. However, I was aware of Brit-Marie's future considering she has her own book, but I still didn't care for her until, like Elsa, the ending. The way the characters all came together was unique, in a sort of gut-wretching yet hilarious way that only Backman can deliver. The reason why I didn't give this book the 4 stars that it may have very well deserved was that frankly, I was consistently bored. The fairytale parts weren't intriguing, albeit an integral part of the story. That being said, the last 40ish pages were phenomenal and of course, a tear-jerker.Overall, do I recommend this book? Absolutely.
в целом, книга неплохая, местами смешная и трогательная, но мне как будто чего-то не хватило и одновременно чего-то было слишком много. бабушка очень забавный персонаж, яркий и интересный. главная героиня Эльса ну слишком уж умная для своих 7 лет, настолько, что она как будто всегда поучала взрослых, а взрослые вокруг неё становились какими-то мямлями, которые вот до неё вообще не понимали, как они жили. некоторые персонажи, такие как Бритт-Мари, даже несмотря на её грустную личную историю, очень меня раздражали, и я не могла для себя оправдать их реплики и поведение, как бы тяжело им в жизни не пришлось. не знаю, почему так, возможно это мои личные триггеры. короче говоря, есть некоторые вопросики, но в целом впечатление положительное, хотя перечитывать книгу я точно не буду.
The first time I tried reading this book I DNF'd it, maybe it wasn't the right time to pick it up. This time, the story was completely different. I laughed, giggled, cried, cried harder, devoured the last hundred pages, kept crying even harder.I loved the characters, their back stories, their personalities, and how one is putting everything in order with each letter. I wish everyone visits, or try to visit, the Land-Of-Almost-Awake at least once, and see y'all in Miamas telling stories for ten thousand eternities of fairy tales.
