Lost Illusions tells the story of two talented and ambitious young men who eventually fail after struggling hard. A talented young man tries desperately to make a name for himself in the literary circles, but in a society where literature has become a commodity, he degenerates into a shameless literary slave who sells his soul, and loses all reputation in the literary strife and partisan struggle. Another young man is a hard-working inventor, who is to kind-hearted to beat his counterpart's sinister scheme, and is forced to give up his patent for invention, burying his ideal of scientific research. The work reflects the social status and mental state of a generation of youth after the French Revolution.
