Basic Topics in the Philosophy of Language

This accessible reader introduces the students to the basic topics in the philosophy of meaning, speech acts, and communication; sense and reference; opacity and attributions of attitude; and meaning and truth. Four sections, each preceded by an authoritative introduction by an expert in the field, present the influential classical and contemporary non-technical writings on each topic. The editor's introduction provides useful notes for both students and teachers as well as a guide to further reading. The readings have been specially selected to allow both undergraduate and graduate students to use the text.
