US Marshal Kaid McCloud, twin brother of stagecoach driver Haley McCloud, has been dead a while now. He was murdered; shot in the back by the Red Gang. Haley has sensed Kaid's help from time to time, but he does not want to follow in his brother's footsteps. He wants to be his own man and decide his own life.
The saloon owner Rosy, Haley's girlfriend, believes Haley and loves him, but his job carries him too far for too long. Despite offers from town officials to hire Haley as the new Sheriff, he rejects all offers and has no interest in being a law man. Haley fears that people will put pressure on him to match his brother Kaid's skills and performance and he wants no part of it. That is until the land baron Obadiah Barnes threatens his family and tries to grab their land. Obadiah Barnes' hard hitting, rough and tough tactics compel Haley McCloud to take a stand.
Obadiah Barnes' offspring follow in their father's dirty and conniving footsteps. The two boys become the terrors of the county and his daughter Louise, having a mother who died giving birth to her, feels no love from her father. Obadiah Barnes hates his daughter and blames her for killing her mother. Louise seeks love elsewhere, secretly among the young ranch hands on her father's ranch.
Chaos, betrayal, death and heart wrenching disasters ensue as Haley McCloud tries to get to the bottom of who really murdered his brother Kaid.
Kaid, on the other hand, already knows. His quick appearances and disappearances to come to his brother's aid in time of need become more frequent and finally starts having face to face confrontations with his brother Haley. No one else can see Kaid...not yet, that is. Kaid is also looking for answers and to find out why he is still roaming the earth as a spirit. He struggles with his emotions and the illogic of why he hasn't crossed over to the other side yet. Lost in his dilemma of trying to find a reason why he should be there, he displays an array of emotions both good and bad in his confusion.
Haley also struggles with his own emotions towards Rosy. Their plans to get married are interrupted by Haley's decision to pursue his brother's murderer, his desire to see justice served, and the wild antics of young and pretty, but very crafty, Louise Barnes.
