She saved me once.

She probably doesn’t remember.
But I can’t forget.

Fourteen years ago, when we were small, I was starving.
Not just my stomach rumbling, but hungry for kindness. For someone to look at me like I mattered.

She did.

Until she couldn’t look at me at all.

I learned how to survive without being wanted in foster home after foster home. Holding on to my memories of her. Of how she saw me as more than nothing.

And now she’s back in my world.

Bright. Successful. Untouched by the ruin that shaped me into the monster I am.

I should stay away.
Men like me don’t get women like her.

But I’ve never been good at letting go.

So I watch. And I wait. Telling myself it’s harmless.
That loving her from the darkness is enough.

Until I see him.

A face from our past.
Someone who remembers what she did.
And wants to make her pay for it.

I have survived worse than him. I’m not afraid to abandon any remaining morals to keep her safe.

My love for her was born in darkness and fear. A glimmer of hope for a boy who had nothing.

Obsession.
Ruin.

But it’s the only good thing I’ve ever felt.

And this time… I’m not letting anyone take her from me.

My Rating: ★★★★★Heart Eyes by Effie Campbell is a dark contemporary romance that leans fully into obsession, trauma, and morally grey devotion, delivering a story that is as intense as it is emotionally consuming. Blending childhood connection with present-day fixation, the narrative explores the lasting impact of being seen and what happens when that fragile moment of kindness becomes the foundation for something far more dangerous.Where this novel stands out most is in its unapologetic commitment to its tone. The emotional intensity is relentless, driven by a male main character whose love borders on possessive obsession, yet remains rooted in a deeply wounded past. His perspective adds a layer of vulnerability beneath the darkness, creating a dynamic that feels both unsettling and compelling. The heroine, in contrast, represents light and normalcy, which only heightens the tension between who he is and who he believes he needs to be to deserve her.The pacing keeps the story gripping from beginning to end, with a steady escalation of stakes that mirrors the unraveling control of the male lead. Rather than pulling back, the narrative leans further into the chaos, allowing the darker elements; violence, moral ambiguity, and blurred consent; to shape the trajectory of the romance. For readers familiar with dark romance, this commitment enhances the immersion rather than detracts from it.Because of this, the reading experience feels all-consuming. The emotional pull is strong, the tension is constant, and the line between love and obsession is deliberately blurred in a way that defines the entire story. It’s the kind of book that is difficult to step away from, not because it is easy, but because it is so fully committed to the intensity it promises.I would strongly recommend Heart Eyes to readers who enjoy dark romance with obsessive love interests, morally grey characters, and high-stakes emotional tension. Those who appreciate stories that explore the darker sides of love; without softening their edges; will likely find this especially compelling.Overall, this is a gripping, unflinching, and deeply addictive read that embraces its darkness without hesitation; resulting in a romance that is as haunting as it is unforgettable.

While it didn't hit the OMFG shelf for me, this book is, however, amazing. Kat and Liam are something that, in my head, resemble a "What if...?" But instead of blond and brunette Barbie, there's Kat, with her heart-shaped stone necklace straight out of the Diamond Castle; Liam as the former bestie now lover; and... Well, the evil they must face to enjoy life together. So, while I realize it is a lame-ass comparison, it makes sense in my head. Now, back to the book and out of my rambling mind, it has its triggering themes, so, of course, get those checked before you read. Other than that, you get a blondie cutie-pie, a tat + pierced MMC, and quite the antics.
