Ambition lures art curator Leonora into the maze of histories in a provincial museum and in the London art market of 1970's England, where deception, disillusionment and death lie in wait. "You have to understand that when you work in a museum, you work with ghosts. Not the banal undead, who traipse through the walls all night bearing lights that the locals see through the windows and report to the papers. Or the grey lady, whom the coppers find floating around, six foot above the floor in the small hours, when they burst into a gallery whilst their dogs whimper in the doorway.
