Beschrijving

In a world where girls are often relegated to background roles, one young woman rises to challenge the norm. Huaxia is a place where dreams of glory are sewn into the fabric of society, especially for boys who aspire to pilot the formidable Chrysalises—giant transforming robots that dominate the battlefield. However, behind the shimmering façade lies a darker truth, particularly for the girls who are often seen merely as supporters.

She dispels the traditional narrative with fierce determination, pushing against the expectations that society has imposed. Her journey showcases the struggles of a female protagonist who refuses to be silenced, seeking her own identity amidst a culture steeped in patriarchal values. As she navigates the complexities of love, loyalty, and power, the stakes are raised, revealing a tumultuous world where alliances are tested and destinies intertwined.

Amidst the chaos of the battles and the societal pressures, she confronts not only external enemies but also the stereotypes that have confined her identity. Through her fights in both the cockpit of the Chrysalis and in life, she discovers the strength of her voice and the power within herself.

Her story is not just one of rebellion but also of transformation. As she takes on roles that challenge the status quo, she redefines what it means to be strong, paving the way for others to rise and challenge a legacy steeped in inequality. This narrative promises a journey filled with action, emotion, and a raw look at the fight for empowerment in an unforgiving world.

This was such a unique concept. I loved the influences of Chinese culture and mythology that I rarely come across in sci-fi novels. Even more rarely there was a poly relationship that was so refreshing instead of the usual 'love triangle'. The strong feminist themes and excellent discussions on gendered society really sung throughout. I could highlight quotes from this for DAYS. Also, giant mechas. I cannot stress how cool this was to read about! Some of the parts I enjoyed less includes some of the secondary characters who felt a little shallow and I struggled to warm to them. It was also a little slow around the 50% mark due to the focus on politics. (This is mainly a personal preference)Our protagonist Zetain was one of the fiercest females I have ever seen and so much fun (well not always fun but definitely compelling) to follow. This didn't pull any punches and was way more intense than I was expecting so please check out the content warnings. I would recommend for those who love feminist tellings, powerful female protagonists, GIANT MECHAS, lgbt+ rep and novels inspired by Chinese culture. Thank you to NetGalley and Rock the Boat for the Advanced Readers Copy.
