Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre erupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the world's most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work "of great genius."

Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontë's masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day.

Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the world's most beloved novels. This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition includes newly written explanatory notes.

I loved Jane's story all the way until the bittersweet end. To look at this story at face value would have it seem almost a romance novel. But it is so much more than that. Jane is a heroine who goes through life braving every horrible thing that may come her way, through it all she never loses her firm grasp in God, as well as in herself. I was very sad when I got to the last page. I wasn't ready to part with Jane and her self respect, her honest care and love for others. Jane Eyre became so real to me that I am at a loss for words. This book has been a wonderful read, I hope that other stories may turn out to touch my heart just as much as this one did.

Absolutely gripped me. Once I was past the first 9 chapters, things began to pick up, and I struggled to put the book down. This book features a rich, complex, heavy first-person narration, and a dark, gothic overtone throughout the novel.
