One of the great Classics of Western Literature, Les Miserables is a magisterial work which is rich in both character portrayal and meticulous historical description.
Characters such as the absurdly criminalised Valjean, the street urchin Gavroche, the rascal Thenardier, the implacable detective Javert, and the pitiful figure of the prostitute Fantine and her daughter Cosette, have entered the pantheon of literary dramatis personae.

Amazing story. 4.5/5 ⭐️ from me. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is that this is the first book in league with War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo that I would 100% advocate for reading an abridged version. Too many huge parts bloated this story and didn't add much to the plot such as the huge section in the beginning about the bishop, Waterloo, and the sewer systems. The parts of the actual story we are drip fed make it worth reading but i will definetly consider abridged versions of Hugos work in the future.

This is a must-read. Everyone is familiar with the broadway play, but the book is SO much better. Truly a classic!
