You were pure once. You can be made pure again.

Celia is so tired of being alone. All she wants is to have a family―to belong to someone. That's why she's going to Kindred Cove for the annual Salt Festival held by the secluded community that lives there. They promise that healing is possible. They promise that transformation is inevitable. There is no grief at Kindred Cove, because there is no suffering. Nothing is ever lost.

Celia knows that, at that mysterious island surrounded by that impossible, ever-growing reef -- she will find herself.

She’s ready to be healed. She’s ready to be transformed.

She's ready to believe.

I feel gross after listening to this. It was such a good, but horrifying read. Celia has been struggling through life, but she hopes that attending the salt festival at Kindred Cove will help fix her. The secluded island community only lets a few chosen visitors onto the island each year, and Celia is determined to make the most of the honor. I wasn't liking it early on, and almost stopped several times. The events that take place in Kindred Cove are mundane, and monotonous. On the surface everything they say sounds practical, if a little odd. But the longer it goes on the more the cracks show. Surrender to the community, they will support you. People don't die, they are still with us, you can't be sad about someone who isn't gone. The messages conveyed make my skin crawl. The scariest part is how normal they make it sound. Xe Sands as the narrator is great. Her soothing tones are hypnotic. Made me sleepy in spite of my interest in the story. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
