Beschrijving

Lemn Sissay's narrative unfolds a harrowing journey of a child who finds himself ensnared by the very system meant to protect him. This specially abridged version captures the essence of his powerful story, revealing the deep scars left by a government that failed him. Through poignant reflections, Sissay illustrates the psychological and emotional impact of his experiences, grappling with questions of identity, belonging, and resilience.

As he weaves through his tumultuous past, Sissay's voice shines with both vulnerability and strength. His words resonate with those seeking understanding of the complexities surrounding the foster care system and the profound effects of childhood trauma. In a world where his narrative is too often overlooked, Sissay's story becomes a vital testament to survival and the search for one's true self.

I would recommend that you listen to the audiobook, narrated by Lemn Sissay himself. A raw and self-aware memoir of Lemn's experience in foster care - it covers the awful reasons why he was taken from his mother, the mental gymnastics he had to do to try and meet his foster carer's needs and expectations, the one-sided reports written about his life and the struggle for a little independence, whilst senior professionals made huge decisions about his life. This memoir includes many beautiful poems from the author, reflecting the different stages in his life up to leaving foster care.
