Recursion feels like reality folding in on itself—part love story, part existential mind trip. Crouch takes the idea of memory and regret and turns it into something you can almost touch. It’s sci-fi without feeling too far removed from real life, the kind that makes you question how much of your own past you’d rewrite if you could. The story plays out like a precursor to the Minority Report meeting The Butterfly Effect, but with deeper emotional stakes and a creeping sense that you’ve lived this moment before like a tangible mandela effect or bad déjà vu

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“My soul knows your soul. In any time.”What a beautiful, mind-bending read about time, memories, grief, and love.Recursion follows two characters across different timelines: Barry Sutton, an NYPD detective struggling with his own personal challenges, whose life is upended by a shocking incident at work; and Helena Smith, a brilliant neuroscientist who finally gets the opportunity she’s been dreaming of—to create a device that preserves people’s most treasured memories and allows them to relive them at will. But her invention carries consequences far beyond what she imagined, capable of changing life as we know it. As Helena navigates the fallout of her creation and Barry delves deeper into his investigation, their paths collide, weaving a story that spans realities. This book was a departure from my usual reads, but I’m so glad I saw it recommended by one of my favorite YouTubers—because it is simply phenomenal. The dual storylines were equally captivating, and once the characters came together, I was completely immersed. Throughout the story, I felt every ounce of grief, hopelessness, regret, and above all, love—the love a parent has for a child, romantic love, and the profound connections between people. The characters are brilliantly written: I admired Helena’s tenacity and perseverance, and Barry’s role as both protector and partner. While some of the science went over my head, it was presented clearly enough to understand and connect with the story. Blake Crouch has crafted one of my new favorite love stories—a quiet, steady romance that grows from friendship and partnership.I recommend this book to every reader, regardless of typical genre preferences. It’s a breathtaking tale of time, love, and life.
