Beschrijving

In the small, isolated town of Siglufjörður, the discovery of a young girl's body sends shockwaves through the community. At just nineteen years old, her life was cut tragically short, and the eeriness of the wintry landscape contrasts sharply with the horror of the crime. Police Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir is called in to unravel the mystery, diving deep into the lives of the townspeople to uncover long-held secrets that may be intertwined with the girl's untimely death.

Hulda, a seasoned investigator with a troubled past, faces the challenges of both the biting cold and the chilling atmosphere that has settled over Siglufjörður. As she sifts through layers of lies and deception, she must confront her own demons while racing against time to catch a killer. The town's tight-knit fabric begins to unravel, revealing jealousy, betrayals, and untold stories that have remained buried under the snow.

With each twist and turn, the investigation reveals that everyone in town has something to hide, and the closer Hulda gets to the truth, the more dangerous her pursuit becomes. The tension builds as the winter nights grow longer, and the stakes rise in this gripping tale of suspense, secrets, and the haunting consequences of past decisions.

Right. I'm currently 3 books into Jonasson's Dark Iceland series and really enjoying it, so I was excited about this series (and really interested in the idea of a story told in reverse). I've come away from it hugely disappointed. The plot felt contrived and rushed and the revelations didn't make any sense at all. There was no depth to any of the characters and the dialogue felt forced throughout. The multiple points of view didn't work for me either. They were clearly written to create a reveal at some point in the book, but those reveals were predictable and didn't have much bearing on the story. I also found the writing really repetitive, with Hulda going over events that we had witnessed multiple times. The book, incredibly, could have been shorter (and probably better) if the instances of going over things we already knew had been cut in half. It's not a long book, I didn't need to be constantly reminded of something that happened 30 pages ago.I don't think the narrator did the book any favours, as she didn't seem to let the book breathe as she read it, often sprinting through sentences in the name of dramatic tension. Overall, this was a real miss for me, and I don't have any interest in continuing the series.
