(Michael Ondaatje, 1943- )
「鮑德溫掌握文字宛如海駕馭著浪,漲潮與拍擊交錯,前進之後撤退,竄升之後躬身而去。思潮轉化成詩,詩點亮思潮。」 ——哈林文藝運動頂尖詩人蘭斯頓.休斯(Langston Hughes, 1902-1967)

Definitely worth reading. The narrator, David, is an American immigrant in Paris who falls in love with an Italian bartender named Giovanni. The book is about their relationship, but it goes far beyond a male-male romance. It’s more about the feeling of doubt and shame that comes with forbidden love. Denying and repressing your true feelings just to fit in with "normal people" and conform to society’s norms , even at the cost of betraying your real self. The writing was a little bit advanced;difficult vocabulary, old-fashioned writing, and quite a bit of French words.Reading it was a great experience, though very sad, especially the parts related to Giovanni’s life.(my poor Giovanni...)⭐ 4 stars (one star less because of the very long descriptions that sometimes felt unnecessary).
I need to write about this book so much, but i feel so tense, so heavy that i can't even reach for the pen.
