Deafening

As World War I approached, Glonya lost her hearing at the age of five. Her grandmother tried to restore her connection with her family and the world. Her mother, unable to accept reality, prayed to God and turned to doctors. The fragments of language her grandmother patiently taught her eventually connected her to the world, and the sign language she learned at a school for the deaf opened up a new life for her. She met Jim, a young man who loved music, and they got married. However, her husband departed for the battlefield, leaving behind their fleeting happiness.

イタニ，フランシス
1942 年カナダ・オンタリオ州ベルヴィル生まれ。オタワ川のほとり、ケベック近郊のちいさな村で育つ。21 歳より、看護師として働く。29 歳で執筆活動をはじめ、短篇集や詩集、児童書を刊行。赤十字の職員である夫とともに世界各地に赴き、ボスニア紛争も経験している。2003 年デビュー長編となる『遠い音』を発表。空前のベストセラーに。コモンウェルス作家賞カナダ・カリブ地域賞をはじめ、数多くの賞に輝き、すでに世界 20 ヵ国以上で翻訳されている
