A twisty mystery that left just enough stones unturned that I cant wait to read the next bookThis book follos Dinnos Kol. An engraver. This is one of the main things I find so facinating with this world.an engraver has been bio-engineered to perfectly recall any memory. Din does this through little sent bottles that he can use to more accurately recal certain memories. For a detective (albiet assistant in this story) this is a nessacary skill. But offers a unique perspective on the story. We know nothing is unreliable informstion because Sees it all exactly. But does mean that I was obsessing over facts that were pointed out that he engraved that were not always mentioned agin because they seemed important. And so went the wild theories and speculations of the case. This is a normal thing as augmentation like this seems standard practice in the world for many features. So gives a super human element to the every day manThe case it self was twisty and complex and the lead investigator was Ana. Now her style of methods really reminded me of sherlock. Her and Din have this wonderful long suffering watson and Sherlock relationship that which added a silly but familiar element to the story. She is absolutely nuts and i do find it unfortunate the story reveals very little about her. There is some intruge to her but comes very late and more to be a loose end to follow. I would have liked to seen more though there are a couple hint that have given me my own theoriesThe world they are in is something that I could describe as imagine something like dishonoured meets pacific rim. There is an ever looking threat that leviathans will arise from the sea and break through the city walls that protect them from the coast. These creatures are massive unknowable creatures from the depths and do well as a reminder that even though they work hard to solve a murder. It would all be meaningless should the leviathan succeed. Makes for interesting quandries and opportunities to arise.Overall, I love the world that was built in this story and the fact that it didn't try to over explain anything. Enough information was sprinkled throughout that you can solve a good chunk of the story. Its the lack of familiarity of the world that hinders knowing the full picture. I like that as it made the characters feel more real to me as of course they figured it out. They are deep in this world and have re-established connections and bias that allow to to make those jumps in logic. Once explained the mysteries make sense and there's nothing that really seems like a stretch either which is great. I very much look forward to reading more of the series to see what shenanigans Ana drags Din into and what other oddities the world brings.
Wow, one of the best mystery/sci-fi/fantasy book I've read.
It has it all. A murder mystery, a sci-fi/fantasy setting, leviathan uprising, and a duo investigator. The setting of the world is phenomenal that I wish to know more about it. The action scenes are incredible and I love the lore of the mystery.
Overall, I love this book so much.

Very Primary school writer at the beginning but it got better and I enjoyed it
I adore Ana and Din. Ana is very clearly autistic and the way her mind works is brilliant. There is much to be said about how the other characters describe her and the commentary on neurodivergency. I did not predict the final twist, and found it to be clever. As with political fantasy there is plenty of commentary on corruption and what I'll just call favoritism.
Sherlock Holmes meets horticulture meets a mysterious fantasy world and I am here for it. Can’t wait for the sequel!
