3.5/5I went into this with high hopes after loving Rook & Rebel, but this one was a struggle. The communication gaps ended up stalling the plot, making a lot of the drama feel avoidable and unnecessary. Overall, the plot never quite found its momentum, and I struggled to connect with Evie. Her choices often came across as manipulative, self-centred, and a little too arrogant for me to to really get behind her.Aiden, though, I genuinely liked. His internal conflict, loving his best friend’s sister and knowing the fallout could cost him everything felt real and grounded. His arc had more emotional weight than the plot itself. Together, Aiden and Evie do have moments where the tension and banter shine. Those scenes were the highlight and kept me invested even when the story dragged.The Shadow POV added some intrigue and was one of the few things pushing the plot forward. I couldn’t guess who it was, which I appreciated. But the moment I was waiting for Rook finding out completely fell flat. Knowing his personality from Rook & Rebel, I expected chaos, drama, maybe even a full blown explosion. Instead, it felt out of character and anticlimactic, which didn’t help the already thin plot.Overall, this had potential, but it never quite delivered the emotional punch or character depth I was hoping for.Fingers crossed Joker and Jinx recaptures the magic and energy I loved so much in Rook & Rebel.Thank you to Netgalley and Kate for the opportunity to read =)
