"It was the time between two world wars . . . when April Mayflower blew into Beulah Point, Missouri. The word 'blew' is a likely understatement, because a tornado would not have caused the commotion and excitement that April introduced to Beulah Point . . ." The rural Ozark people don't quite know what to think when April Mayflower-a jaded author from the east coast-shows up at their village's general store, driving an old, Model A Ford pickup. Dressed in rolled-up, oversized denim overalls and a gingham shirt, wearing a pair of rubber galoshes, and sporting a well-worn straw hat, Miss April is a novelty . . . and an outsider. April hopes to find a quiet retirement among the fiercely independent and self-sufficient Ozarkers, but she soon stumbles onto a local mystery with national implications. As a result, she is plunged into the lives of her neighbors and becomes caught up in their hardships, joys, and sorrows. When a mysterious lawyer with a droopy mustache and twinkling green eyes comes on the scene, April finds herself happily trading her "quiet retirement" for adventure, excitement, and a hint of danger. Through it all, April discovers that life at age fifty-three is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new life!
