Florence, 1518, in an Italy that never was...

Steamships ply the canals that links Florence to the sea, the skies are tainted by industrial waster from the foundries and manufactories, and the Great Engineer's sophisticated weaponry has confounded enemies from Rome to the the Gulf of Mexico. But the now-elderly Leonardo da Vinci has become increasingly reclusive, apparently awaiting a new Flood which will sweep away the wickedness of the world.

Not long after the great painter Raphael arrives in Florence on a mysterious mission for the Medici Pope, one of his entourage is found brutally killed, in a locked tower room. The crime is just the first of many, and apprentice artist Pasquale finds himself in possession of a dangerous weapon and on the run through the shadows of the city, engineers and artists in hot pursuit.
