Opis

In a vivid exploration of identity and belonging, Ibi Zoboi crafts a story that weaves together real-life experiences with the complexities of race, culture, and self-acceptance. The narrative centers around a protagonist returning to their roots, compelled to confront the past and redefine what home truly means amidst a backdrop of social and personal challenges.

Zoboi's writing delves deep into the intricacies of skin color and the perceptions tied to it, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of finding one's voice in a world filled with judgment. Through relatable characters and heart-wrenching moments, the story captures the essence of teenage angst and the longing for connection in a rapidly changing society.

As the journey unfolds, readers are invited to reflect on their own identities, as well as the broader societal issues that shape lives and relationships. Celebrating resilience and authenticity, the narrative leaves a lasting impact, encouraging individuals to embrace their uniqueness.

I loved Pride, her Pride and Prejudice retelling and Punch the Air is a modern masterpiece. For some reason Skin just didn't resonate with me and I had a hard time trying to connect to the story and the characters. One word to describe Skin is messy. It's messy in writing and story content wise in a way that it didn't know what direction it wanted to take. Our two Main Characters ,Genevieve (17 years old) and Marisol (15 years old), who were dealing with a lot of issues of growing up, just didn't click with me at all. I wanted to connect with and what was going through with Marisol dealing with a strict mom and Genevieve dealing with her skin but them and everyone else around them ( Marisol Mom, Genevieve Dad and Stepmom) was so unlikable. The fantasy part of the book was interesting but if you weren't familiar with the lore it comes from it wouldn't make a lot of sense. Also the ending felt so incomplete that there wasn't any sense of closure for the two girls. So It's 2.5 stars but I am rounding it to a 3 because of the Audiobook thanks to Bahni Turpin narrating one of the girls. She was acting her ass off as usual with the material that was given. If you want a book that is also written in verse dealing with two teenage girls coming from two different worlds who connect and form a bond I recommend Clap Where You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo.
