ABOUT THE IDIOT
One of the Dostoevsky’s Masterpieces – A Truly Beautiful Soul
‘” A fool with a heart and no brains is just as unhappy as a fool with brains and no heart. I am one and you are the other, and therefore both of us suffer, both of us are unhappy.”’
Just Two years after completing Crime and Punishment , Dostoevsky produced another masterpiece, The Idiot . It was first published in 1869 in the Russian Empire. Our edition features the original English translation by Eva Martin (1915).
The story begins when Myshkin returns to Russia from a sanatorium in Switzerland. The prince, scorned by the society of St. Petersburg for his generosity and naiveté, finds himself in the middle of a struggle between a wealthy, kept woman and a beautiful, virtuous girl, both of whom wish to win his affection. Unfortunately, the very best of Myshkin seems to bring misfortune to everyone he meets. In a world obsessed with money, power, and sexual conquest, the shocking conclusion tragically reveals that a sanatorium is the only place for a saint.

Myshkin feels sorry for Nastasya and Rogozin feels passion towards her.Myshkin - JesusRogozin- devilThe only positive woman character in this novel is Vera Lebedeva. It’s always though to read Dostoevsky because he re opens your soul and force you to dig deeper until you start to reflect what a sinner you are. This book also shows how Russian society is sick and is not ready for the second Jesus appearance.
At this point in time, I find the story confusing. The characters confusing and doesn't make sense to me why they did what they have done. So I have decided to drop it and maybe in the future I can pick it up again with a better comprehension skill.
