Winter should be a quiet time on the holiday island of Gotland. But two crimes shatter the peace for Chief Inspector Anders Knutas.

The first body found is Henry Dahlström, an alchoholic photographer. He had just had a spectacular success at the races, winning 80,000 krona when his horse came home in the fifth race of the day. The next morning his body, badly beaten, is discovered in his darkroom.

Weeks later, a 14-year-old girl is reported missing. A lonely child, with few friends and living with her dysfunctional mother, her only joy is looking after the horses at the local stables.

Can these two crimes be connected? Photographs found in Dahlström's darkroom suggest a sinister link...
