De vijftienjarige Laurel heeft altijd op het platteland gewoond met haar hippie-ouders. Wanneer ze met zijn allen naar de grote stad verhuizen zodat Laurel naar de middelbare school kan, moet ze heel erg wennen. Ze mist haar oude huis enorm, al gaat het goed op school en raakt ze bevriend met David, een knappe jongen uit haar klas. Tot Laurel merkt dat ze vleugels krijgt… letterlijk. Ze durft haar ouders niet in vertrouwen te nemen en gaat samen met David op zoek naar haar afkomst.
Als Laurel erachter komt dat ze ooit te vondeling is gelegd, is het raadsel compleet. Wie is ze, en nog veel belangrijker: wát is ze precies?

Since this appears to be Aprilynne Pike's first book, I guess I should go a little easy on her. At first, I hated the book. The narration seemed childish. The story seemed fake (of course it is about fantasy, but you know what I mean). She seemed to keep skipping from third-person omniscient to first-person. Near the end of the book, the author seemed to get more of a hold on what she was doing. Of course, I did love that Pike told a story that was not told before. It was a whole new story and a new take on Faeries that I had not heard before. At times, her description was wonderful and as if I could see and sense what she was describing. Other times it seemed overdone and adolescent. I wouldn't read it again; however, maybe the rest of the books in the series will be worth a read, just to see where Pike goes with it.
I thought this book was really good! I was reading other people's reviews and saw that a lot of them didn't like it .... well anyways I really liked it and can't wait to read the next one !!!!!
