Descrição
Art is a play between life and death. In analogy to the human body, food forms a bridge between mind and matter, between consumption and culture. In 20th century Art this bond develops a disorderly character. Ketchup and blood, bones and donuts, fish bones or mussel-shells are just some of the foods that have written contemporary art history. The tea pastry - the famous “madeleine” - in Marcel Proust roman „A la recherche du temps perdu“, the numerous painted foodpackagings in Pop Art, bread and sausages in the works of Dieter Roth or the famous “Merde d’Artista” by Piero Manzoni; food as a daily recurring ritual forms a central social component, in life as well as in art. Whether as consumption icon (Warhol), as a kind of creative host (honey and chocolate with Beuys) or as a visible expression of processes of digestion and disintegration; “Lebensmittel fungieren in der Kunst als Lebens-Mittel”. It undertakes enormous creative, metaphoric and material-aesthetic dimensions. Food in Art narrates – symbolically and realistically – tales of consumption and ritualization, of obsessions and decay... and in the end maybe also from the wish to cultivate and to „feed“ the Self.
