This felt like 2 different books and I hated the second one. The start was incredible but the second Akiva came in it all went downhill.
I have a different cover to the one above... It's got a door on the cover, which I actually preferred.I also bought this book a couple of years ago ( or more 🫣) I'd realised it was a trilogy, with a cliffhanger (which I don't like) so it went on my TBR shelf... And has travelled the world twice 🙄.Well now I live in a caravan travelling so there's no room for bookshelves 😭 and I'm currently reading all those books I bought but never had time to read and then donating them to little libraries as we travel (although I think I'll let my granddaughter read it first)I just hope you I can find a copy of the other books 🧐📚 as I need to find out what happens next.So what did I think 🤔 OMFG WHY DID I NOT READ IT SOONER 🫣I've been stuck in this book every moment possible. The beginning had me entranced with Prague (always wanted to visit) and of course Karou and Zuzana and the Art and their friendship 🥰.The one thing that I really liked was that Karou was both strong, but vulnerable, brave and also hesitant. She wasn't the atypical YA female character. Now onto the wonderful weirdness... Karou's secret life being a gofer for Brimstone... The pace of the book was perfect for me, each nugget of information, leading the reader and Karou to the knowledge of how she had come to live with Brimstone all her known life. The main Male character,Akiva also was well crafted.I could go on, but to really explain I'd be spoiling the book for new readers and I don't do that. When Akiva finally realised who Karou was and had that moment where he had a choice of telling her the truth to help her or to hide that knowledge because he would lose her I expected the storyline to take the predictable route, I'm glad I was wrong. Now I have to wait till I can find a copy of book 2 to find out what Karou and Akiva do next (And whether Zuzana gets a reply 😉)
Fans of The Night Circus and A Darker Shade of Magic would like this book. It was well written, but I found the book needed more robust world-building as there were strong character descriptions, but I would have liked to see a more substantial world creation.
