Descrição

In a world where winter brings about an extraordinary transformation, humans enter a deep hibernation to escape the harshness of the season. Jasper Fforde crafts a whimsical narrative that explores the consequences of this unique lifestyle. As society adapts to this months-long slumber, the few who dare to stay awake, known as the Early Risers, navigate through a landscape infused with dreams and the haunting remnants of winter's chill.

The story unfolds in a society delicately balanced between the danger of an unkempt winter and the vibrant, chaotic life of those who embrace the frosty elements. The Early Risers, drawn from various walks of life, are tasked with maintaining order during the hibernation period, facing bizarre scenarios and surreal challenges. Their adventures blend humor with a thought-provoking examination of survival, identity, and the depths of human resourcefulness.

In the midst of this peculiar setting, Fforde introduces a cast of eccentric characters whose interactions bring both laughter and tension. As they confront the absurdity around them, they reveal deeper truths about relationships, society, and the human spirit's resilience against the odds. The narrative is laced with Fforde's signature cleverness and charm, making for an engaging exploration of a fantastical concept that resonates with the complexities of the human experience.

I only got Early Riser as a stopgap between Shades of Grey 1 & 2 (still waiting for 2...), and didn't know what to expect. I really don't like reading spoilers before starting a book or film or tv series, so only knew it was about humans hibernating as the norm over winter and that was about it. As I got further into the story I knew I was going to enjoy it, and I did. Fforde's wit shines through, and I love the references to things outside of the specific universe he built here, and the nun's names are brilliant!Definitely on my 'to read again' list.
