Ver TodosThis book went far beyond my expectations. I hadn’t read a thriller like this before, especially one centered around a siege, and it was a refreshing change from what I usually read. The story is told from two viewpoints:1.The hostage taker’s wife2.The hostage negotiatorI really liked both perspectives.I found myself emotionally invested in the story. I had prepared myself for a heartbreaking ending, so it meant a lot to me that everyone ended up getting their happy ending instead. It was the complete opposite of what I had anticipated,I was genuinely happy about that.
This is my second book by Gillian McAllister and while I liked the first, I really liked this one. The premise and beginning really sucks you in immediately - new mom's first day back to work after maternity leave and she finds out mid day that her kind and gregarious husband is the perpetrator of a hostage situation in a warehouse. I loved how it came together in the end as well. Part 3 I was literally reading between work meetings - couldnt put it down. Minus a star for a little bit of slow meandering in the middle and a bit too much inner monologue for my taste, but very easily overlooked once things pick back up. This was a pretty fast and fun mystery to read and uncover. I saw the author wrote the book not long after having a baby. It felt quite true to the new mom experience so the main character was endearing and relatable.
The premise was interesting. There was a lot to keep readers guessing about who was good and who wasn't. I guessed some of the twists, but not everything. My biggest gripe was that I just couldn't connect with the characters. They all felt flat, with their closeness or distance from the incident really being their only characterization (and being a parent/infertile). It was a little slow for a while too
