Descrição
The book deals with globalization and its impact on developing countries. While globalization has of late been subjected to considerable debate, its definition is often not very clear. In this book globalization is defined only in economic terms, to mean freer flows of trade, foreign direct investment and finance, and liberalization of trade and investment policies. The effects of globalization and information technology are examined in terms of growth and productivity, poverty and income distribution, and employment both globally and in Africa, East and Southeast Asia, South Asia and Latin America. It is argued that the benefits of freer trade and capital flows need to be weighed against the social costs involved. Since costs at the country level may be significant, globalization needs to be managed carefully in order to minimize the costs and maximize gains
