Love the story here, not my favourite couple of the book but was still a great read
A friends-with-benefits arrangement with a much-younger man leaves them both wanting more in this spicy hockey romance from USA TODAY bestselling author Rachel Reid.
The level of spice is driving my 4 star rating. The story would only be a 3 for me. Predictable. But their sexual connection was probably the best in the series.
After finishing Game Changer, I had hoped to meet Kyle again in the series because he kind of caught my attention as someone more than a minor character. He held onto the pages he was on and I was hopeful he would get his own HEA after being the man who made Kip realise he was an idiot and go after Scott. I did like Common Goal, and I’m glad that Kyle did indeed get his own hot hockey player in goalie, Eric who’s somewhat older but new to exploring his bisexuality. I liked how Kyle takes his time to make Eric comfortable, and there’s a balance between the two in a similar manner to Scott and Kip because whilst Eric is new to this side of himself? Kyle knows who he is when it comes to his sexuality even if other elements of his life are far from easy for him. What I didn’t like however, is that there is quite a bit of miscommunication between the two of them, and whilst I can understand the why from both sides - it’s one of the tropes I don’t particularly resonate with. Kyle, wary from past relationships, isn’t seeking anything serious after a late-night bar chat he decides to play matchmaker for the cautious Eric that evolves into a ‘friends with benefits’ situation. Now, most of us who’ve done a FwB set up know that you can catch feelings but will these two tell one another? When you factor in a sixteen-year age difference between them, things get even more complicated. Don’t get me wrong. I love the two together and despite the worries that Eric especially has about his relationship and his thoughts about what comes next for a man in his forties who plays a hard sport such as hockey? Kyle and Eric make sense and provide a balance for one another. I just wanted to knock their heads together so that they can see what the reader can see that they’re not hooking up but actually dating long before they acknowledge it. Stepping away from their relationship, I really liked the growth both Kyle and Eric have even over a short period of time, Kyle is able to shake off the weight of being hurt and exposed in his first relationship and has clearly made him feel unworthy then there’s Eric’s exploration of what comes after hockey and I loved the direction he goes is both for himself and for Kyle - no spoilers but it’s cute. I had visions of him as a pundit at first, but he’s taking time for himself probably for the first time since he showed promise with a puck… and their self-discovery I think, helps make their foundation as a couple both realistic and for the story - long lasting. Alongside Eric and Kyle’s story we get to see more of Scott and Kip from an announcement of their engagement to their wedding at the end of Common Goal. I always love it when writers give us a way of becoming immersed into their fictional world and having time and/or events move on within the books really helps. I loved seeing the characters who’ve become favourites in the Game Changers (yes I love Shaun and Ilya but these two got me hooked first) go from strength to strength in their own relationship. I hope we get glimpses of Eric and Kyle too at a later date - and to see the Kingfisher become the bar that Kyle and his friends have envisioned under their care.
