The layout's role is crucial in providing an overview and sense of unity to the production. The layout design stage is said to have been fully introduced into the production system for the first time by Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki in 1974 for the TV series Heidi, a Girl of the Alps (produced by Zuiyo).
