The Red Swords came with the sunrise, and took everything that Shawna Llewan held dear.
She alone escaped the slaughter, stealing the very thing that drew them down on her family and making for Ferolan, the great port city of Cambrell. She has no idea of the storm that is coming down upon her, and doesn’t even know if she’ll make it before she bleeds out on the dusty road. Revenge is all she has to keep her alive.
All Dormael Harlun wants is to finish his drinking and find a bed somewhere out of the cold. He’s far from home, fresh from the road, and already drunk when he’s suddenly awakened and led to Shawna, wounded and barely alive. He decides to help her, but his mind is full of questions about what happened to her—and why something in her possession makes his magic react so violently.
Tossed together by chance, they rely on what little allies are left to them as they flee the Red Swords—but the story behind Shawna’s artifact is much stranger than either of them could have imagined. Each clue only leaves them with more questions. Chasing the answers will cost them more than they ever knew, and expose them to powers as dark as death and as old as time itself.
