The Tollivers were a fighting race, especially when the prize was Burnham Hill, the large plantation sprawled on the banks of the James River. The land was everything--always--and it drew brothers Clinton and Matthew on a collision course as surely as the moon and sun attract the tidal waters.

Clint, the perverse, willful master of the privateer Celia, fought the British on the high seas but never doubted that he would someday return to claim the land--his birthright--and the splendid Elvira Smith who was his for the asking.
