Tolstoy is famous for great novels such as Anna Karenina and War and Peace. Later in life, Tolstoy turned his back on these long, complex works. His later works were shorter, simpler and often highly spiritual. This anthology is a selection of Tolstoy's later works that develop "Wisdom in Threes"; three main lessons, three main characters, or three events leading to a climax.
"Wisdom in Threes" is a collection of six beautiful stories that Tolstoy wrote later in life. In "The Three Hermits", three hermits are able to teach a Bishop that words from the heart might have more meaning than words from books; even holy books. "What Men Live By", "The Godson", and "Three Questions" were written to deliver three simple lessons. "Where Love Is, God Is" uses three events to illustrate a single lesson. In "How Much Land Does a Man Need" a man's life unravels in three stages as greed gradually consumes him.
The stories from this collection include some of Tolstoy's greatest literary achievements. James Joyce described one short story presented here, "How Much Land Does a Man Need", as the “the greatest story that the literature of the world knows”. This admiration is shared by many religious figures as well. Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Buddhist writer and monk, included another piece from this anthology, "Three Questions", in one of his books. He felt Tolstoy deserved to be called a Bodhisattva. Tolstoy's short stories are often used in sermons and homilies around the world. Pope Benedict XVI has used a Tolstoy story as a backdrop to one of his homilies.
