Ignacio Ellacuría was a prominent Spanish Jesuit priest and theologian known for his significant contributions to liberation theology. Born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, he dedicated his life to the intersection of faith and social justice, primarily in the context of El Salvador, where he became a key figure during the civil war. Ellacuría's work emphasized the importance of understanding Christianity within the social and historical realities of the oppressed, advocating for a theology that empowers marginalized communities.

As the rector of the Central American University in San Salvador, he played a crucial role in educating a generation of thinkers and activists.
