Описание

An England from which men have largely been eliminated is the scene of Mr. Beresford's story. A suddenly appearing plague spreading from China. to Russia and thence across Europe practically wipes out the male population, leaving the women to reorganize society. The order that results is by no means a. paradise, but certain revered conventions become obsolete. Money loses its value, so do titles, houses and fine raiment. and at the close when it is discovered that an appreciable number of men still exist in the world men and women are ready to start over together on a better level of equality and with a clearer perception of what each must contribute to their common civilization.

"It will be perceived that Mr. Beresford owes something to Mr. H. G. Wells. but he easily liquidates the debt, and while he reasons v. little less closely, and hardly possesses that author's grasp of detail, his work is sincere and thoughtful. and deserves a hearing. We cannot associate ourselves with all his opinions, and in places the book might have been better written: some of the dialogue in the earlier part is noticeably stilted, but as a whole it is exhilarating."
-Athenaeum [1913]

"Mr. Beresford's story... is more than plausible; it is overwhelmingly convincing. Granting its initial premise, the sudden destruction of practically all the men of a country, and of large numbers of the women, the story is remorselessly truthful and logical. It is laid upon the hard foundation of fact, upon the bedrock of human nature, and we may read its portent with all the faith and surety that we read the historical narratives of some gifted historian whose imagination gives him command of the realities of life."
-Boston Transcript [1913]

"With a very few cynical irreverences, the tale satirizes conventions and develops with reason and persuasive imagination."
-Spectator [1913]
