He served as a parish pastor for many years in Ohio and Iowa. He graduated from Wittenberg University and Hamma School of Theology. In 1976 he received his Doctor of Ministry degree. Schmalenberger served as Pastor Evangelist and Pastor Director of Evangelical Outreach for the ELCA. He has taught in Hong Kong, Germany. Jamaica, and Liberia.
