In the remote isolation of a deserted fjord, a young couple relocates in search of a quieter life in 1955. Their hope for tranquility is shattered when unexpected events unfold, drawing them into a web of intrigue and danger. The harsh, beautiful landscape becomes a character of its own, reflecting the couple's emotional turmoil and the secrets that lurk beneath the surface of their idyllic surroundings.

As tensions rise and the atmosphere thickens with suspense, the couple finds themselves facing challenges that test their relationship and resilience. The arrival of an unfamiliar presence threatens to unravel their existence, prompting a fight for survival amid mistrust and apprehension. In this gripping tale, the serene facade of a new beginning is upended, forcing the couple to confront not only the external dangers but also their own hidden fears and desires.

Another very solid showing in Jonasson's Dark Iceland series. This is my favourite so far, and I was seriously hooked throughout. Multiple storylines converge in really interesting ways, and the resolution was immensely satisfying. Yeah, I'm aware of how infuriatingly vague that is, but it's crime fiction, people! Even a list of characters can spoil the plot! I really enjoy Ari Thor as a character, even if I don't think I'd like him as a person - lucky for me, he's fictional. I was pleased to see Isrun back, and I loved her arc and subsequent character development. I can't wait to move on to the next book - I'm firmly on the Icelandic Noir train, thanks to Jonasson. Choo choo!**also, I listened to the audiobook and Leighton Pugh is as wonderful as he was in the last book**
