Geoffrey C. Bowker delves into the intricate world of classification and its profound implications on society in this thought-provoking exploration. He articulates how our categorization systems shape our understanding of the world, influencing everything from professional domains to everyday interactions.
The book invites readers to consider how classifications, while seemingly neutral, can carry biases and unintended consequences. Bowker prompts a reflection on the power dynamics inherent in the act of sorting, revealing that the way we categorize things speaks volumes about our values, priorities, and perceptions of reality. As he weaves together theory with real-world examples, he encourages a deeper awareness of the systems that govern our lives.
