Описание

About seven miles north of Manchester, England, there is a small valley known as Daisy Nook.

The valley is about a mile long and half a mile wide with steep, wooded sides, descending into grassland. There is a shallow river which snakes its way through the valley and one road which seems to plunge into the valley on one side and fight its way out the other. It is a peaceful place laying no claim to our noble history, but like all valleys and dales in this country it is steeped in stories, myths and legends, this being one of them.

It’s often said, in fact it’s very rare indeed, that a book which can be described as work of the highest inspiration lands on your desk. The Balloon Man tells a story of Christ’s visit in the guise of a balloon man, to the fair at Daisy Nook, near Failsworth, Manchester, England in 1920. And just like his original visit almost 2,000 years ago. The son of God finds his best welcome comes from the children.

To the Church his coming is greeted with disbelief, to the authorities he’s an embarrassment. But all is well when the wily police chief persuades him that the aftermath of World War One is not the right time to come. “Come back in the 1980s,” he says.

If that sounds like I’ve told you all the story, or that this book lays on the religion a bit thick, don’t be misled. It’s all set against a background of rumbustious Lancashire life laced with passages that will have you splitting your sides.
